
Paul A. Sheridan, a partner with the firm Vann & Sheridan, LLP, graduated from Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia, in 1987 and from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law in 1992. He also completed the Washington Semester/Justice Honors Program at The American University in 1986. Paul has been licensed to practice law in North Carolina since 1992.
Due in part to his background, Paul has been a guest speaker and lecturer, as well as the author of articles in multiple trade publications. He focuses on civil litigation, drafting and interpreting contracts, contract administration, and construction issues, including lien and bond law. He has also been a speaker focusing on recycling contracts for municipalities, for the Carolina Recycling Association’s 8th Annual Conference and 3rd Annual Southeastern Green Building Conference. Paul was also the guest speaker on recycling and waste contracts as they impact the hospitality industry for the Wake County Solid Waste Management Division’s Hospitality Waste Reduction Workshop and Trade Show. Paul was twice recognized as Business North Carolina Magazine’s Legal Elite Attorneys, in 2003 and 2004. Most recently, he has was asked to be a lecturer/presenter for the North Carolina Bar Association’s continuing education program “Boots on the Ground” focusing on due diligence and environmental issues, and he has lectured at an annual “Hot Topics” seminar in Charlotte, NC, on the topic of Recent Changes in Title Insurance and the Impact of Bankruptcy Law decisions on Title Coverage. Paul is currently serving as a committee member on the North Carolina Bar Association, Construction Section’s Committee on Lien Law Revision proposing substantive legislative re-writing of North Carolina General Statute § 44A.
Throughout his legal career, Paul has concentrated in the areas of construction, contract and business law. With a background as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for a group of commercial subcontracting companies located in New York, he has an interest in business construction matters and extensive knowledge in the area of contract disputes, risk allocation and resolution. In addition to his real world commercial construction experience, Paul was the Managing Member and Chief Operating Officer of a residential development and construction company, in Southeastern Arizona. building and under his guidance grew to annual sales of $20 million dollars within three years. He oversaw the building of executive custom homes, single family dwellings and the acquisition, development from raw dirt to completed lots, financing, building, marketing and sales of residential neighborhoods. Paul’s experiences allow him unique insight into the full spectrum of business ownership and construction practice from the perspective of the builder, developer, general contractor, subcontractor, homeowner and realtor. His deep understanding of the all aspects of the construction process allows him to craft solutions for all players in the industry. He can empathize with the day to day concerns of a business owner or manager, and is able to problem solve many of the issues that can arise, while successfully attaining your company’s goals.
Paul also exercises his legal prowess outside the construction industry, frequently handling corporate formations, share holder disputes, creditor bankruptcy claims and defenses including bankruptcy litigation, adversarial proceedings, preference claims, collection matters, administrative and regulatory agency representation relating to licensing, fraudulent conveyance actions, non-competition, trademark, zoning cases. He has litigated over a thousand cases, many through trial and/or arbitration, and several through the appellate process.
He represents a varied client base including developers, general contractors, suppliers, subcontractors, lending institutions, title companies, mortgage companies, engineers, and architects.
Paul is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, the North Carolina Bar Association, Construction and Lien Law Divisions and Bankruptcy Division, the American Bar Association, Construction Industry Division, the Wake County Bar Association, and the United States District Court, Eastern, Middle and Western Districts.
